The Ogun State Police Command has intensified its investigation into the death of a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, with an official of the scheme now in custody over alleged links to the incident.
The deceased, identified as Victoria Ariyo, was serving in Abeokuta South Local Government Area of Ogun State before her death under circumstances that have triggered public concern and official scrutiny.
Preliminary findings indicate that Ariyo reportedly died from complications related to a pregnancy issue, with multiple sources suggesting the complications followed a terminated pregnancy.
Police authorities confirmed that the case is currently under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department, while declining to disclose full details pending the outcome of ongoing inquiries.
As part of the investigation, an NYSC official—reportedly serving as a Local Government Inspector in Abeokuta South—has been taken into custody for questioning. The official is alleged to have had a personal relationship with the deceased, a development believed to be central to the case.
Sources further disclosed that the officer was picked up at the state police command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, as detectives work to establish the sequence of events leading to Ariyo’s death.
The tragic incident comes barely weeks after another corps member, identified as Adeleye Mary, died under unclear circumstances in the same local government area. Reports indicate that both deceased corps members were acquaintances, although authorities have not established any direct connection between the two cases.
Meanwhile, the remains of Ariyo have been buried at Kobape Cemetery along the Kobape–Sagamu Road in Abeokuta.
Efforts to get an official response from NYSC authorities in Ogun State were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report, further heightening calls for transparency and accountability in the handling of corps members’ welfare and safety.
The police say investigations are ongoing, and further updates will be made available as more facts emerge.
