The Council of State has officially endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s nomination of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan as the next Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The unanimous approval came during a Council meeting held on Thursday at the State House, Abuja, with President Tinubu presiding.
According to reports, President Tinubu presented Amupitan’s name as his preferred choice to succeed Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure as INEC chairman has come to an end.
Amupitan, a distinguished legal scholar and indigene of Kogi State in Nigeria’s North-Central region, becomes the first person from the state to be nominated for the nation’s top electoral position.

The nomination now awaits final confirmation by the Senate, in line with constitutional provisions guiding appointments to the electoral body.
The Council of State, comprising former presidents, vice presidents, governors, and key government officials, is constitutionally empowered to advise the president on national matters, including the appointment of key officers like the INEC chairman.
