Abuja, July 24, 2026 — Nigerian-Canadian-trained neurosurgeon, physician executive and academic, Prof. Wale Sulaiman, MD, PhD, FRCS(C), CON, is set to receive the 2026 National Diaspora Merit Award for his contributions to healthcare and humanitarian service.
The recognition is being conferred by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) as part of the commission’s annual programme celebrating Nigerians abroad whose professional accomplishments and sustained contributions have positively impacted Nigeria.
NiDCOM’s official 2026 National Diaspora Merit Award programme identifies medicine and healthcare, alongside philanthropy and several other sectors, among the categories covered by the award. The commission says the award is intended to recognise Nigerians in the Diaspora who have made measurable contributions to national development and to highlight them as role models for others.
The commission’s 2026 programme also states that the fourth edition of the National Diaspora Merit Award is scheduled for July 26, 2026. The award ceremony forms part of activities surrounding the 2026 National Diaspora Day celebrations, which are being held from July 24 to 25 under the theme, “Harnessing Global Diaspora Medical Expertise to Strengthen Local Health Systems for National Development.”
Prof. Sulaiman’s selection places his career at the intersection of specialist medicine, medical education, healthcare leadership and humanitarian intervention. A neurosurgeon with professional experience in Nigeria, Canada and the United States, he has maintained a longstanding connection with Nigeria while building an international medical career.
His supporters and professional associates have highlighted his efforts to expand access to specialist healthcare, support medical education and create opportunities for knowledge transfer between Nigerian healthcare professionals and institutions abroad.
His humanitarian activities have included participation in medical outreach programmes and the provision of specialist medical services to underserved Nigerians. He has also been associated with initiatives aimed at supporting the professional development of medical students, resident doctors and fellows, as well as strengthening links between Nigerian medical practitioners and international healthcare institutions.
One of the notable aspects of his engagement with Nigeria has been his continued involvement in the country’s healthcare sector despite his professional responsibilities abroad. His work has been presented as an example of how highly skilled Nigerians in the Diaspora can contribute expertise and experience to the development of local institutions and healthcare capacity.
Prof. Sulaiman currently serves as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Ila-Orangun (FUHSI), a position in which he has been involved in efforts to advance medical education and institutional development. He was formally inaugurated alongside other university governing council members in 2024.
His leadership at FUHSI has also included initiatives focused on improving the welfare and learning environment of students. In December 2024, for example, he donated two mini-buses to the university to help address transportation challenges faced by students.
The 2026 National Diaspora Merit Award is not the first national recognition of Prof. Sulaiman’s contributions. He has previously been associated with national honours and recognition for his work in medicine, healthcare development and humanitarian service, including the conferment of the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).
The award also comes against the backdrop of NiDCOM’s broader effort to strengthen the relationship between Nigeria and its estimated more than 20 million citizens living outside the country. According to the commission, the National Diaspora Merit Award was established to encourage Nigerians abroad to continue contributing their skills, resources, technology, investments and philanthropic support to national development.
The commission’s 2026 National Diaspora Day programme places particular emphasis on healthcare, reflecting growing efforts to mobilise the expertise of Nigerian medical professionals in the Diaspora to strengthen local health systems. Against this backdrop, Prof. Sulaiman’s recognition underscores the potential impact of sustained engagement between Nigeria’s Diaspora professionals and institutions at home.
For Prof. Sulaiman, the National Diaspora Merit Award adds another distinction to a career spanning specialist neurosurgery, medical leadership, academic service and humanitarian engagement. His recognition is also expected to reinforce the message at the heart of NiDCOM’s Diaspora policy: that Nigerians who build successful careers abroad can remain important partners in advancing healthcare, education and other areas of national development.
