Why Uber Pulled Out of Nigeria After 12 Years — The Real Factors Behind the Exit

Posted on September 5, 2026September 5, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on Why Uber Pulled Out of Nigeria After 12 Years — The Real Factors Behind the Exit

Uber has ended its ride-hailing operations in Nigeria after about 12 years in the country, bringing an abrupt close to a service that helped reshape urban transportation and popularise app-based taxi services among Nigerians. The company’s withdrawal took effect on September 2, 2026.

The American mobility company, which first launched in Lagos in 2014 before expanding into other Nigerian cities, said it had taken the “tough decision” to wind down its Nigerian operations following a review of its business priorities and investment focus across Africa.

However, Uber did not identify a single event or specific problem as the reason for leaving Nigeria. Instead, the company described the decision as part of a review of its business, stressing that the withdrawal was specific to Nigeria and Uganda and would not affect its operations in other African markets.

One major factor confronting ride-hailing operators in Nigeria has been the sharp increase in operating costs. Rising fuel prices, inflation and naira volatility have pushed up the cost of running vehicles, while creating additional financial pressure for both drivers and ride-hailing platforms.

The Nigerian ride-hailing industry has also become increasingly competitive. Uber is no longer operating in a market where app-based transportation is a relatively new concept, as several local and international platforms compete for passengers and drivers, making profitability and market share more difficult to maintain.

Driver economics have added another layer of difficulty. Higher fuel and maintenance expenses can squeeze what drivers earn from each trip, while passengers facing economic pressure may become increasingly sensitive to fare increases. This creates a difficult balance for platforms seeking to keep both riders and drivers active.

Uber’s Nigerian departure also coincides with a much broader restructuring of the company. Around the same period, Uber announced plans to eliminate approximately 3,300 corporate positions, representing about 10 per cent of its workforce, as part of efforts to simplify its organisational structure and reduce management layers.

The company is simultaneously directing greater attention and investment toward future mobility, particularly autonomous vehicles and robotaxi technology. Reports indicate that Uber is pursuing a major investment programme in autonomous transportation, including its expansion into supervised self-driving rides in London.

Importantly, Uber’s exit was not linked to recent discussions concerning e-hailing operations at Nigerian airports, according to information reported by Channels Television. This distinction is significant because airport transport regulations and the activities of ride-hailing companies around Nigerian airports have generated considerable public debate.

For Nigerian riders and drivers, the departure nevertheless marks the end of an important chapter in the country’s transportation history. Uber’s 12-year presence helped accelerate the adoption of digital ride-hailing, but its exit demonstrates the increasingly difficult economics of operating a mobility platform in Nigeria. The company’s help centre is expected to remain available until September 23 to assist users with outstanding account-related matters, while the wider Nigerian ride-hailing market continues without one of its earliest major players.
