LONDON, UK — Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, has died at the age of 82. The news of his passing was confirmed this afternoon by his family and official spokesperson, Garba Shehu.
According to a public statement shared on social media, the former leader died peacefully in a London clinic on Sunday, July 13, 2025. The announcement reads:
“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.”
Buhari, a retired Major General, held a significant place in Nigeria’s political history. He served as military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and returned decades later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023.
Widely known for his anti-corruption stance, strong leadership style, and the “Change” mantra that defined his political movement, Buhari’s administration witnessed major reforms, infrastructural expansion, and heightened security challenges.
His death comes over two years after leaving office and settling into private life in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, before traveling for medical care abroad.
