The federal government has unveiled plans to target 15 million households, or approximately 75 million Nigerians, as part of its conditional cash transfer scheme.
Each qualifying household will receive N25,000 three times a year as part of efforts to alleviate economic hardship among vulnerable citizens.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, Nentawe Yilwatda, disclosed on Monday.
He explained that the initiative is part of President Bola Tinubu’s broader strategy to address the economic challenges facing those at the lower end of the socio-economic spectrum.
“The president was specific in his policies to ease the challenges faced by people at the lower end of the pyramid,” Yilwatda stated. “We are targeting 15 million households, which will translate to approximately 75 million people benefiting from this scheme.”
The Minister also highlighted that, so far, the government has reached 5 million individuals and is in the process of cleaning up the social register to ensure accurate distribution. The cash transfer scheme had been suspended earlier in January due to alleged corruption within the National Social Investment Programme. However, it was restarted in February, with the government now aiming to extend the benefits to an additional 12 million households.
