A lone hippopotamus that had been wreaking havoc in communities across southern Adamawa State has been successfully captured by local youths after a deadly encounter in Banjiram village.
Recent heavy flooding around Kiri Dam in Shelleng Local Government Area displaced several hippos from their riverine habitat into neighbouring communities in Guyuk and Shelleng LGAs.
These animals invaded homes, farmlands, and riverside settlements, causing widespread fear and destruction. A young man in Banjiram tragically lost his life on July 28 during one such incursion.
Residents sounded the alarm, prompting concerted community action. Traditional authorities, including district heads from both LGAs, joined the appeal to the state government for urgent rescue efforts. Government officials confirmed they received the delegation and pledged support.
Following the fatal incident, local youth groups in Shelleng undertook the risky mission of capturing the hippo after it strayed from Guyuk. Their efforts paid off, the animal was finally contained in Shelleng LGA, restoring some relief to anxious communities.
Floodwaters have forced at least 200 hippos from Kiri Dam into populated zones, risking further human-wildlife conflict. The animals have destroyed crops, flooded homes, and threatened livestock, but wildlife protection laws prohibit harmful retaliation, leaving residents feeling vulnerable and constrained.

Community leaders, including the Chairmen of Guyuk and Shelleng LGAs, Shalom Kassa and Abubakar Abba, have appealed to the Adamawa State Ministry of Environment and wildlife agencies to urgently address the issue before more lives are lost.
The Secretary to the State Government, Awwal Tukur, assured citizens of swift action to manage the situation effectively .
