Nigerians to Pay $80 Customs Duty for Shipments to USA

Posted on August 29, 2025August 29, 2025 By Rextun boss No Comments on Nigerians to Pay $80 Customs Duty for Shipments to USA

Nigerians sending parcels to the United States will now have to pay a mandatory $80 customs duty or its naira equivalent, following a directive announced today. The new charge, which takes effect immediately, applies to all postal shipments destined for the U.S. and will be collected at the point of dispatch.

According to clarifications from the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), the duty is not a new tax invented by the agency but a Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) levy that NIPOST merely facilitates through its Parcel Clearance Fee system. This means the $80 charge will be prepaid in Nigeria and remitted directly to Customs on behalf of senders.

What It Means for Nigerians

The flat-rate duty is expected to make shipment costs more predictable but also raises concerns among exporters, small business owners, and Nigerians in the diaspora who regularly send goods across the Atlantic. For many, the new fee could increase the overall cost of doing business, especially for small parcels.

Speaking on the development, Lagos-based trade analyst Dr. Ugochukwu Eze noted that while the policy may improve transparency in duty payments, it risks discouraging low-volume exporters.

“A flat $80 fee may not seem much for bulk exporters, but for individuals sending small items like documents, books, or gifts, it is significant. Policymakers should consider a tiered system that balances revenue generation with affordability,” Eze said.

Government’s Perspective

The Presidency defended the new measure, stressing that it is part of broader reforms aimed at blocking revenue leakages and aligning Nigeria with international customs standards. Officials believe the prepaid approach will also reduce delays at clearance points since duties would have been settled upfront.

Economic commentator Hauwa Bello added that the government is likely under pressure to boost non-oil revenues:

“With fluctuating oil income, customs duties are now a major source of internally generated revenue. This move is consistent with fiscal tightening we’ve seen across sectors, but the burden often falls on everyday citizens and SMEs.”

What Senders Should Do

Plan Ahead: Factor in the $80 duty when budgeting for shipments to the U.S.

Watch Exchange Rates: The naira equivalent may vary daily depending on official and parallel market rates.

Ensure Proper Documentation: Complete and accurate forms will help avoid unnecessary delays since duties are already prepaid.

As the policy takes effect, Nigerians at home and abroad will be watching closely to see whether the new system delivers the promised ease of clearance or simply becomes another layer of financial burden on cross-border trade.
