The All Progressives Congress (APC) has formally endorsed Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, for a second term in office, signaling strong support for his leadership following his recent defection to the ruling party.
APC leaders have urged voters in Rivers State to rally behind both Governor Fubara and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the governor as a strategic political figure whose governance has bolstered the party’s presence in the state.
Speaking at the commissioning of the Permanent Secretaries’ Quarters in Elimgbu, APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, commended Governor Fubara’s performance and appealed to party members and residents to support the APC in upcoming elections.
“I congratulate our governor and our party. When the governor is performing well, it reflects positively on the APC at the national level,” Basiru said. He added that the most effective way to recognize the governor’s achievements is through continued electoral support for the party.
Basiru expressed confidence that Rivers State would deliver significant votes for the APC in future elections, including the 2027 presidential and gubernatorial polls.
Governor Fubara’s move to the APC marks a notable shift in the South-South political landscape, traditionally dominated by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The defection strengthens the ruling party’s foothold in the region, positioning Fubara as a central figure in its long-term electoral strategy.
The decision to switch parties follows months of political tensions in Rivers State, which involved disagreements with former Governor Nyesom Wike, House of Assembly divisions, impeachment threats, and a six-month state of emergency declared by President Tinubu.
Since joining the APC, Fubara has received intensified backing from party leadership, further fueling speculation about his second-term ambitions. Earlier statements by political insiders, including former presidential aide Ita Enang, suggested that APC governors who defect to the party could expect strong support for re-election.
In a complementary development, the National Security Adviser visited Governor Fubara in Port Harcourt, reportedly conveying President Tinubu’s approval of the governor’s management of security matters, highlighting federal confidence in his administration.
With APC’s public endorsements and strategic positioning, Governor Fubara appears poised to consolidate his influence in Rivers State while shaping the party’s trajectory in the South-South ahead of the 2027 general elections.
