JUST IN: U.S. Embassy in Abuja Raises Security Alert Ahead of #FreeNnamdiKanuNow Protest

Posted on October 17, 2025October 17, 2025 By Rextun boss No Comments on JUST IN: U.S. Embassy in Abuja Raises Security Alert Ahead of #FreeNnamdiKanuNow Protest

In a sharply worded alert issued Friday, the United States Embassy in Abuja has warned U.S. citizens in Nigeria to take heightened security precautions ahead of a planned protest under the banner #FreeNnamdiKanuNow, set to take place on Monday, October 20, in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory.

According to the embassy notice, the demonstration is expected to begin around 7:00 a.m. in Abuja, with protestors converging on Eagle Square and the Central Business District (CBD), eventually pressing toward the Aso Rock Presidential Villa.

The protest has been orchestrated by human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, who announced the date and route via his social media platforms on October 9. Sowore has described the demonstration as “historic” and intended to be peaceful, with the central demand being the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

In its advisory, the U.S. Embassy cautions that although the protest is intended to be peaceful, “there may be roadblocks, traffic congestion, and confrontations between police and protestors that could turn violent” particularly around the Eagle Square and the CBD.

The Embassy strongly urged U.S. citizens to:

Avoid protest zones and large gatherings

Minimize movement throughout the city on Monday

Keep cell phones charged and carry valid identification

Monitor local news and remain alert in public places such as shopping centers, cinemas, and places of worship

Advise children to stay home from school and suggest domestic staff commuting from outside Abuja not report to work on that day.

Despite the warning, the Embassy and its Consular Sections are expected to remain open.

In a related development, the Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected a police application seeking to bar the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest from proceeding. Justice Umar declined to grant an ex parte order preventing the demonstration and instead instructed that the police formally serve notice on Sowore, adjourning further proceedings to Tuesday.

This judicial decision effectively clears a legal hurdle that could have derailed Monday’s planned march, setting the stage for a possible face-off between security forces and protestors around sensitive locations like the Presidential Villa.

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of IPOB, has been in custody since June 2021 following repatriation from Kenya, and faces terrorism-related charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

His detention has long been a point of contention among civil rights activists and separatist sympathisers, with #FreeNnamdiKanuNow emerging as a rallying cry among supporters pushing for judicial review and release.

With the U.S. Embassy’s alert and the court’s refusal to restrain the protest, attention is now on Monday’s events in Abuja. Security logistics will be tight, road closures likely, and public safety a major concern.

For citizens and expatriates in the city, prudence is the watchword: avoid protest routes, stay informed via credible local media, and heed all official advisories.
