National Grid Suffers Fresh Collapse, Triggering Widespread Blackouts Across Nigeria

Posted on December 29, 2025December 29, 2025 By Rextun boss No Comments on National Grid Suffers Fresh Collapse, Triggering Widespread Blackouts Across Nigeria

Nigeria’s electricity sector suffered another major shock on Sunday, December 29, 2025, after the national power grid collapsed, plunging large parts of the country into darkness and once again exposing the fragility of the nation’s power infrastructure.

The system failure led to a near-total shutdown of electricity supply, with power generation and distribution dropping sharply across most states. Reports from industry monitoring platforms showed that electricity sent out from the grid fell to almost zero shortly after the collapse.

Data released by power sector observers indicated that only a few distribution companies received minimal electricity, while the majority of DisCos nationwide were allocated zero megawatts. This resulted in sudden blackouts in major cities including Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Enugu, Kano, and Ibadan.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) confirmed the grid failure and said emergency restoration procedures were immediately activated. According to the operator, engineers began system recovery efforts shortly after the collapse, although no definitive timeline for full restoration was announced.

As the outage spread, households, businesses, and industries were forced to rely on diesel and petrol-powered generators, further increasing operating costs amid already high energy prices. Commercial centres and small-scale manufacturers reported disruptions to daily operations.

This latest incident adds to a growing list of grid collapses recorded in 2025, reinforcing public frustration over the recurring instability of Nigeria’s electricity supply despite repeated assurances of reforms and system upgrades by authorities.

Power sector experts have consistently attributed repeated grid failures to ageing transmission infrastructure, weak system redundancy, inadequate maintenance, and fluctuating gas supply to generating plants, all of which continue to strain the national grid.

Although the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and the Federal Ministry of Power had not issued a detailed explanation as of press time, past collapses have often been linked to line faults, frequency instability, and sudden generation losses.

Consumer advocacy groups say the repeated outages underscore the urgent need for massive investment in transmission capacity, decentralised power solutions, and improved grid management to reduce the frequency of nationwide blackouts.

As restoration efforts continue, Nigerians remain watchful, hoping for a swift return of electricity and long-term solutions that will finally put an end to the cycle of grid collapses and nationwide power outages.
