A major explosion has reportedly rocked parts of Tehran amid intensifying hostilities between Iran and the United States, following the downing of an American fighter jet in what analysts describe as a dangerous escalation in the ongoing conflict.
Multiple reports confirm that Iranian air defence systems shot down a U.S. F-15E Strike Eagle over Iranian territory, marking the first confirmed instance of an American combat aircraft being brought down by enemy fire in the current war.
The aircraft, which carried two crew members, was hit during operations over southwestern Iran. Both personnel ejected before the crash; one has since been rescued by U.S. forces, while a second crew member remains missing, triggering an urgent and complex search-and-rescue mission.
The incident has significantly heightened tensions, with Iranian authorities reportedly mobilising local networks and security units to locate the missing American crew member, even as U.S. forces continue recovery efforts under hostile conditions.
Amid these developments, explosions were reported in and around Tehran, coinciding with renewed waves of U.S. and allied airstrikes targeting Iranian military and strategic infrastructure. The blasts underscore the intensifying scale of the conflict, which has already spread across multiple fronts in the Middle East.
In a further escalation, a second U.S. military aircraft, an A-10 attack jet was also struck during follow-up rescue operations near the Persian Gulf, although its pilot was successfully recovered.
Military analysts say the downing of the jets challenges earlier claims of total U.S. air superiority and highlights Iran’s continued capability to deploy effective, mobile air defence systems despite sustained bombardment.
The broader conflict, now several weeks old, has expanded beyond Iran’s borders, with missile and drone exchanges affecting Gulf states and Israel, raising fears of a wider regional war. Thousands of casualties have already been reported, alongside growing concerns over global energy disruptions and geopolitical instability.
Despite the escalation, diplomatic efforts toward a ceasefire remain uncertain, with both sides maintaining hardline positions even as the humanitarian and strategic costs of the conflict continue to rise.
