The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have officially called off the strike action in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) following extensive negotiations with the FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike. The decision brings an end to days of industrial action that disrupted activities across government offices and agencies in Abuja.
The strike, which involved workers under the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC) of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), was embarked upon over unresolved welfare issues, conditions of service, and disagreements between labour unions and the FCT authorities. The action led to the partial shutdown of public services, affecting residents and businesses within the nation’s capital.
Breakthrough came late on Monday night after a marathon meeting that stretched into the early hours of Tuesday. The talks were convened with the intervention of key stakeholders, including members of the National Assembly, particularly the Senate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory, in a bid to prevent further escalation of the dispute.
Sources familiar with the meeting disclosed that discussions were frank, exhaustive, and focused on rebuilding trust between organised labour and the FCT administration. Labour leaders reportedly laid out their grievances in detail, while the FCT Minister responded to each issue and gave assurances aimed at restoring industrial harmony.
At the end of the meeting, both sides reached a truce, with the NLC and TUC agreeing to suspend the strike and direct all FCTA workers to immediately resume work. The labour unions said the decision was taken in the interest of peace and to allow the agreements reached to be implemented without further disruption.
