Suspected hoodlums have killed Kazeem Oyewole, a former unit chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.
The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday afternoon around the Elelede Junction area of the city. Oyewole previously served as part-time chairman of the NURTW Aregbe Unit between 2018 and 2022.
As of the time of reporting, the exact circumstances surrounding his death had not been officially established. However, a resident who witnessed the incident from a distance and requested anonymity due to security concerns said a group of suspected hoodlums had positioned themselves at Elelede Junction, allegedly demanding money from passersby under the pretext of raising funds for a planned carnival.
According to the witness, a motorcycle carrying two passengers was stopped by the group, leading to an altercation. During the confrontation, gunshots were reportedly heard, and one of the passengers was later identified as Oyewole.
The witness alleged that Oyewole was violently attacked during the incident and died at the scene, while the second passenger managed to escape with injuries. The attackers reportedly fled before security operatives arrived.
A shop owner at Elelede Junction, identified simply as Basira, confirmed that some NURTW members later arrived at the scene and identified the deceased as Oyewole.

Following the killing, tension reportedly rose in parts of Osogbo as some NURTW members were said to have moved around motor parks in search of those responsible for the attack.
Reacting to the incident, the Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed that the command had commenced a full investigation and that officers had been deployed to the area to maintain order and track down the perpetrators.
The killing adds to a worrying pattern of violence involving transport union officials in the state. In November 2025, Adeboye Ademoroti, chairman of NURTW Unit 1 in Ilesa, Osun State, was shot dead by gunmen.
