A renewed sense of political calm is spreading across Rivers State following key administrative changes announced by Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara on Thursday. In a statement issued at Government House, the governor approved the immediate appointments of Dr. Dagogo S.A. Wokoma as the new Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and Barrister Sunny Ewule as Chief of Staff.
The appointments, announced by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Onwuka Nzeshi, take effect immediately. The swearing-in ceremony for the new officials was scheduled for 2:00 p.m. today at the Executive Council Chamber, Government House, Port Harcourt.
Dr. Wokoma replaces Mr. Benibo Anabraba as SSG, while Ewule takes over from Edison Ehie as Chief of Staff. The statement did not outline reasons for the change, but political observers say the moves are part of broader efforts to stabilise governance after months of political tension.
The appointments come after a period of intense political challenges in Rivers State, marked by a prolonged power struggle between Governor Fubara and factions within the state’s political landscape loyal to former governor and current Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike.
Weeks ago, following a high-level intervention by President Bola Tinubu, impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, were officially withdrawn by the Rivers State House of Assembly. That move helped ease tensions and laid the groundwork for renewed dialogue among political stakeholders.
Political stakeholders and community leaders have welcomed the new appointments, expressing hope that the fresh administration team will help consolidate peace and foster effective collaboration between the executive arm of government and the state legislature. Analysts say this development could encourage the timely passage of legislation and the full reinstatement of democratic governance after previous uncertainties.
