FEC Approves One-Year Salary as Gratuity for Retiring Federal Civil Servants

Posted on March 5, 2026March 5, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on FEC Approves One-Year Salary as Gratuity for Retiring Federal Civil Servants

Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a new policy granting retiring federal civil servants a gratuity equivalent to 100 per cent of their annual emolument, marking a significant shift in the country’s retirement benefits structure for public sector workers.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Federal Executive Council chaired by Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The approval introduces a lump-sum gratuity payment for eligible civil servants at the point of retirement in addition to benefits they already receive under the pension system.

Under the new arrangement, retirees from federal ministries, departments, and agencies funded by the treasury will receive a gratuity equal to their total annual pay package. The package covers the worker’s consolidated salary and allowances calculated as their yearly earnings at the time of retirement.

Government officials explained that the policy was introduced to strengthen retirement welfare for federal workers who have spent decades in public service. The move is also intended to provide additional financial support at the end of service and help retirees adjust more comfortably to life after employment.

The gratuity scheme will operate alongside Nigeria’s existing pension framework administered under the National Pension Commission. Since the introduction of the contributory pension system in 2004, many federal civil servants have relied mainly on pension savings without the traditional gratuity component that existed under the old pension arrangement.

Authorities said the newly approved benefit is designed to bridge that gap by reintroducing a form of exit payment while maintaining the contributory pension structure. It is expected to complement the retirement savings accumulated in workers’ pension accounts over the course of their careers.

According to officials from the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, the gratuity scheme will take effect from January 1, 2026, and will apply to civil servants who have completed a minimum of ten years in federal service before retirement.

Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson‑Jack, described the council’s approval as a milestone in improving the welfare of public servants. She noted that the policy recognises the dedication and years of service that civil servants contribute to national governance and development.

Implementation of the policy will involve coordination among several government institutions, including the Budget Office of the Federation and the Office of the Accountant-General, to ensure that funding and payment structures are properly integrated into the federal financial system.

Analysts say the introduction of a one-year salary gratuity could boost morale across the federal civil service and strengthen confidence in government commitment to workers’ welfare, while also offering a more secure financial transition for retirees after years of service to the nation.
