Multiple explosions struck Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, on Monday evening, causing deaths, injuries, and widespread panic among residents.
The coordinated blasts occurred at several high-profile locations across the city, including the Post Office area, the bustling Monday Market, the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and parts of the Kaleri neighborhood.
Emergency responders and security personnel were swiftly deployed to the affected sites, where injured victims were evacuated to medical facilities. Witnesses reported seeing casualties at the scene, particularly around the market area, although authorities have yet to confirm an exact death toll.
Officials from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) indicated that a large number of victims were treated at hospitals following the explosions, with many sustaining varying degrees of injuries.
Preliminary reports suggest the blasts may have been linked to suicide bombings, though no group has officially claimed responsibility as of the time of reporting.
Reacting to the incident, Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum condemned the attacks, describing them as “barbaric” and “inhumane,” while urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies.
The explosions came just hours after Nigerian military forces reportedly repelled attempted attacks by suspected insurgents on the outskirts of Maiduguri, raising concerns about a renewed wave of violence in the region.

Maiduguri, long considered the epicenter of insurgency in northeastern Nigeria, has faced repeated attacks over the years from extremist groups such as Boko Haram and its splinter faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
Authorities say investigations are ongoing, while residents have been advised to avoid affected areas as security agencies continue assessments and clearance operations.
The latest incident underscores lingering security challenges in the region, despite previous claims of improved stability.
