Real Madrid delivered a commanding performance at the Etihad Stadium, defeating Manchester City 2–1 on the night to seal a resounding 5–1 aggregate win and advance to the quarter-finals of the 2025/2026 UEFA Champions League.
Holding a comfortable 3–0 advantage from the first leg, the Spanish giants showed composure and clinical efficiency to complete the job in hostile territory.
Brazilian forward Vinícius Júnior was the standout performer, scoring both goals for Madrid. He opened the scoring in the 22nd minute from the penalty spot after a handball by Bernardo Silva, an incident that also resulted in a red card for the City midfielder, leaving the hosts with ten men for most of the match.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, City responded through Erling Haaland, who equalised just before halftime to briefly raise hopes of a comeback. However, Madrid maintained control and capitalised late on, with Vinícius netting his second goal in stoppage time to seal the victory.
The second-leg result confirmed Madrid’s dominance over both legs, having already secured a 3–0 win in the first encounter.

City struggled to recover from the early setback of Silva’s dismissal, with the numerical disadvantage significantly limiting their ability to overturn the deficit. Manager Pep Guardiola acknowledged the difficulty of the situation, as his side exited the competition at the round of 16 stage.
For Real Madrid, the victory marks another statement run in Europe, as they progress to the quarter-finals with confidence and momentum. Notably, this is the third consecutive season they have eliminated Manchester City from the competition.
The Spanish side now await their next opponent as the race for European glory intensifies.
