US Moves to Strip Nigerian of Citizenship Over Multimillion-Dollar Tax Fraud

Posted on March 20, 2026March 20, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on US Moves to Strip Nigerian of Citizenship Over Multimillion-Dollar Tax Fraud

The United States Department of Justice has filed a civil lawsuit seeking to revoke the citizenship of a Nigerian-born man, Emmanuel Oluwatosin Kazeem, following his conviction in a large-scale tax fraud and identity theft scheme.

According to court filings, Kazeem—who was previously naturalised as a U.S. citizen—allegedly obtained his citizenship through fraud and concealment of criminal activity. Prosecutors argue that his involvement in extensive financial crimes both before and after his naturalisation disqualifies him from holding U.S. nationality.

Kazeem was convicted in 2017 on multiple counts, including wire fraud, mail fraud, aggravated identity theft, and conspiracy. In 2018, he was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for masterminding a sophisticated tax fraud operation.

Investigations revealed that he led a network that stole personal data from hundreds of thousands of victims and used the information to file fraudulent tax returns across the United States. Between 2012 and 2015, the syndicate filed over 10,000 false tax returns, seeking more than $91 million in refunds.

Authorities confirmed that at least $11 million was successfully obtained, with significant portions of the proceeds transferred overseas, including to Nigeria.

Court documents show that Kazeem purchased tens of thousands of stolen identities—reportedly over 91,000—from a foreign hacker. These identities were distributed among co-conspirators who used them to bypass tax system safeguards and channel fraudulent refunds into prepaid debit cards and other accounts.

The scheme ultimately affected more than 259,000 victims, making it one of the most extensive identity theft and tax fraud operations prosecuted in the United States.

The Justice Department maintains that U.S. citizenship is a privilege that can be revoked if it was obtained unlawfully. Officials say the civil action falls under denaturalisation laws, which allow courts to strip citizenship from individuals who secured it through deception or misrepresentation.

If the court rules in favour of the government, Kazeem could lose his U.S. citizenship and face deportation after completing any remaining legal obligations.

The case has drawn renewed attention partly because Kazeem’s prison sentence was commuted in 2024 as part of a broader clemency action. The DOJ’s latest move signals a continued effort to pursue accountability through civil immigration proceedings, even after criminal sentencing.

The lawsuit underscores the U.S. government’s increasing reliance on denaturalisation as a legal tool in cases involving serious financial crimes and immigration fraud.
