FG Awards N2.25 Billion in Student Venture Capital Grants to 45 Emerging Innovators

Posted on March 30, 2026March 30, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on FG Awards N2.25 Billion in Student Venture Capital Grants to 45 Emerging Innovators

The Federal Government of Nigeria has disbursed a total of ₦2.25 billion to 45 outstanding students drawn from tertiary institutions across the country, in a landmark push to stimulate youth-led innovation and entrepreneurship.

Each beneficiary received ₦50 million under the Student Venture Capital Grant initiative, a flagship programme designed to support scalable, student-driven business ideas with high growth potential. The recipients emerged from a competitive selection process that initially featured 65 finalists representing both public and private universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education nationwide.

The initiative reflects a growing policy shift toward empowering young Nigerians not just as job seekers, but as job creators. By providing substantial seed funding, the government aims to bridge the long-standing gap between academic innovation and commercial viability, enabling students to transform ideas into sustainable enterprises.

According to officials familiar with the programme, the selection process emphasized originality, feasibility, scalability, and potential socio-economic impact. The final 45 awardees distinguished themselves through innovative proposals spanning sectors such as technology, agriculture, healthcare, renewable energy, and creative industries.

The Student Venture Capital Grant is widely seen as part of a broader national strategy to address youth unemployment, promote economic diversification, and harness the demographic advantage of Nigeria’s large youth population. Analysts note that access to capital has historically been a major barrier for young entrepreneurs, particularly students with limited financial backing.

Stakeholders in the education and startup ecosystems have welcomed the development, describing it as a bold intervention that could catalyze a new wave of innovation-driven enterprises across the country. However, they also emphasize the importance of post-funding support, including mentorship, regulatory guidance, and market access, to ensure the long-term success of the funded ventures.

If effectively implemented and sustained, the programme could redefine the role of tertiary institutions as incubators of enterprise and innovation, positioning Nigerian students at the forefront of Africa’s emerging startup economy.
