ADC Heavyweights Storm INEC Headquarters Over David Mark Leadership Dispute, Warn Against “Threat to Democracy”

Posted on April 8, 2026April 8, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on ADC Heavyweights Storm INEC Headquarters Over David Mark Leadership Dispute, Warn Against “Threat to Democracy”

A coalition of Nigeria’s most prominent opposition figures on Wednesday converged on the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja, staging a high-profile protest against the commission’s refusal to recognise the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) under David Mark.

Leading the demonstration were former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, among other political stakeholders.

The protest, widely tagged #OccupyINEC, drew hundreds of party loyalists and supporters who marched through parts of the Federal Capital Territory before assembling at INEC’s Maitama headquarters. Participants carried placards and banners calling for the protection of democratic institutions and due process.

At the centre of the demonstration is a deepening leadership crisis within the ADC. INEC had withdrawn recognition of the party’s National Working Committee led by Mark following a dispute with another faction linked to Nafiu Bala, reportedly backed by a court ruling.

Protest leaders accused the electoral body of bias and warned that its actions could undermine Nigeria’s multi-party system. Addressing supporters, Obi called on citizens to resist any attempt to erode democratic values, stressing that “democracy must not be killed.”

The demonstration also reflected a broader political alignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, as key opposition figures increasingly rally under the ADC platform in a bid to challenge the ruling establishment. Analysts note that the dispute over party leadership—and INEC’s stance—has become a flashpoint in the evolving opposition coalition.

Despite the tension, the protest remained largely peaceful, though it caused significant disruption to traffic and movement around the commission’s headquarters. Protesters insisted their action was a constitutional expression aimed at safeguarding democratic norms and ensuring fairness in the electoral process.

The unfolding standoff now places pressure on INEC to clarify its position on the ADC leadership crisis, as political actors warn that the outcome could shape both party stability and the broader credibility of Nigeria’s electoral system.
