15,000 LAUTECH Students Approved for NELFUND Loans Still Await Disbursement, VC Reveals

Posted on April 17, 2026April 17, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on 15,000 LAUTECH Students Approved for NELFUND Loans Still Await Disbursement, VC Reveals

The Vice-Chancellor of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Professor Rasaq Kalilu, has disclosed that approximately 15,000 students of the institution who were approved for student loans in 2026 are yet to receive their funds from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund.

Kalilu made this known on Thursday during a press briefing held ahead of the university’s 18th convocation ceremony in Ogbomoso, Oyo State. The development raises fresh concerns about delays in the implementation of the federal government’s student loan scheme, which was introduced to ease financial burdens and expand access to higher education.

According to the vice-chancellor, while the 2026 cohort of approved students is still waiting for disbursement, about 5,000 students from the university successfully benefited from the scheme in 2025. He did not specify the cause of the delay but indicated that the university is closely monitoring the situation.

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund, a key initiative of the federal government, was designed to provide interest-free loans to eligible students in tertiary institutions across the country. The scheme has been widely regarded as a critical intervention in addressing financial barriers to education, particularly for students from low- and middle-income backgrounds.

However, the delay in disbursing funds to thousands of approved students at LAUTECH underscores operational challenges that may be affecting the programme’s rollout. For many students, the loans are expected to cover tuition fees and other academic expenses, making timely disbursement crucial to their academic continuity.

Stakeholders within the education sector have continued to call for improved efficiency and transparency in the administration of the loan scheme, warning that prolonged delays could undermine confidence in the initiative.

As LAUTECH prepares to celebrate its 18th convocation, the issue of pending loan disbursements remains a pressing concern for affected students and their families, many of whom rely heavily on the scheme to sustain their education.
