United States President Donald Trump will travel to China from May 13 to 15 for a major state visit focused on trade relations, the Iran crisis and broader geopolitical tensions, Chinese authorities confirmed on Monday.
China’s Foreign Ministry said Trump’s visit comes at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping and will include bilateral meetings in Beijing aimed at stabilising relations between the world’s two largest economies.
The visit marks Trump’s first official trip to China since returning to office and the first by a sitting US president to Beijing since his 2017 state visit during his first administration.
According to reports from US and international media, discussions between both leaders are expected to centre on the ongoing tensions involving Iran, trade disputes, artificial intelligence cooperation, Taiwan and rare earth mineral agreements.
The White House reportedly views the trip as strategically important amid rising global economic uncertainty and growing concerns over the Middle East conflict involving Iran. US officials are expected to press Beijing to use its influence on Tehran, particularly regarding oil trade and regional stability.
China remains one of the largest buyers of Iranian oil, a factor Washington believes gives Beijing significant leverage in ongoing diplomatic efforts surrounding the conflict.

Trade tensions are also expected to dominate discussions. The US and China have remained at odds over tariffs, technology restrictions and market access despite several rounds of negotiations in recent years. Analysts say the summit could help prevent further deterioration in relations, although expectations for a major breakthrough remain limited.
Reports indicate the visit will feature formal state ceremonies, bilateral meetings and a state banquet in Beijing. Trump is also expected to tour historic sites in the Chinese capital during the trip.
The summit was initially planned earlier in the year but was postponed amid tensions linked to the Iran conflict.
