Residents of Iluke community in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State have been thrown into panic following the abduction of a community health worker and his wife by suspected gunmen during a midnight attack.
The victims, identified by locals as a popular medical practitioner known as “Dr. Ebi,” and his wife, were reportedly kidnapped in the early hours of Thursday after armed men invaded the Okebukun area of the ancient Bunu community.
According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers stormed the area at about 1:00 a.m., moving from house to house before whisking the couple away on motorcycles. Residents said the gunmen fired several shots into the air while fleeing the town, creating widespread fear among villagers and neighboring settlements.
The abducted health worker was said to operate a private clinic within the community and was well known among residents for providing healthcare services in the area.
The latest incident has further heightened insecurity concerns across the Bunu district and surrounding local government areas, including Mopamuro and Ijumu, where residents reportedly woke up to news of the attack in fear of possible further invasions.
Community sources disclosed that criminal attacks and kidnappings have become increasingly frequent in parts of Kogi State in recent months, with locals repeatedly calling for stronger security presence across vulnerable rural communities.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had yet to officially confirm the abduction or announce any arrests connected to the attack. However, residents appealed to the government and security operatives to intensify rescue efforts and restore confidence in the affected communities.
The incident adds to growing concerns over rising kidnappings and violent attacks in parts of North Central Nigeria, where armed groups have increasingly targeted travelers, schools, religious centres and rural settlements.
