The Nigerian government has formally declared its interest in bringing a Formula 1 Grand Prix to Abuja, marking a bold bid to become the first African host of such an event in over 30 years.
Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), has appointed Opus Racing Promotions co led by former Premier League footballer Marvin Sordell, to spearhead formal discussions with Formula 1 and the FIA on Nigeria’s behalf.
The initiative includes hosting trackside officials, such as F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, scouting potential circuit locations, and laying the groundwork for negotiations.
The proposed plan aims to develop a world-class circuit in Abuja as part of a broader motorsport infrastructure initiative that includes a karting track, hotels, technology hub, and motorsport museum.
According to Dikko, the project not only aims to stage a weekend race but also to stimulate lasting tourism, drive economic growth, and upgrade national infrastructure under President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope and Shared Prosperity” agenda .
If successful, Nigeria would become the first African country to host a Formula 1 race since South Africa’s Kyalami Grand Prix in 1993.

South Africa and Rwanda are also vying for this distinction, but Nigeria’s expansive economic profile and youthful audience promise compelling appeal .
Dikko emphasized that Nigeria is ready to explore all viable options. “We are exploring all possibilities to bring Formula 1 to Nigeria as soon as practicable not just as a sporting event, but as a catalytic driver of tourism, infrastructure development, youth engagement, economy and indeed soft power for Nigeria,” he stated .
Opus Racing Promotions has already started formal negotiation steps with F1 and FIA executives, while awaiting a visit from Domenicali to assess proposed sites and partnerships.
