NCoS Releases First 10 Inmates Under Nigeria’s Historic Parole System

Posted on June 18, 2026June 18, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on NCoS Releases First 10 Inmates Under Nigeria’s Historic Parole System

Nigeria has recorded a landmark milestone in its criminal justice reform efforts as the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) announced the release of the first 10 inmates under the parole provisions of the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019. The development marks the first official implementation of parole in the country’s correctional history.

The parolees were released from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Umuahia, Abia State, on June 11, 2026, following assessments conducted under the legal framework established by the NCoS Act. The initiative is designed to allow eligible inmates who have demonstrated good conduct and readiness for reintegration to serve part of their sentences under supervised community-based conditions.

Speaking during the reappointment ceremony of the National and State Parole Boards in Abuja, Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, described the development as a historic breakthrough in Nigeria’s correctional reform journey. He noted that the successful release of the parolees demonstrates that the parole framework introduced under the 2019 law is now fully operational.

According to the NCoS, the National Parole Board is responsible for coordinating parole administration across the country, assessing eligible offenders for supervised release, monitoring compliance, and ensuring uniform implementation of parole policies nationwide.

The Controller-General also announced the reappointment of members of the National Parole Board and the continuation of State Parole Boards across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory for another three-year term. He urged board members to maintain integrity, transparency, professionalism, and fairness in all parole-related decisions.

Correctional authorities believe the parole system will help reduce overcrowding in custodial centres, support offender rehabilitation, lower recidivism rates, and promote successful reintegration into society. The initiative aligns with global correctional best practices that emphasize restorative justice and gradual reintegration rather than purely punitive incarceration.

The NCoS commended the Abia State Command, the State Parole Board, the judiciary, and other criminal justice stakeholders for pioneering the implementation, expressing confidence that the programme will be expanded across the federation.

The parole initiative represents one of the most significant reforms since the enactment of the Nigerian Correctional Service Act in 2019, reinforcing the government’s commitment to a correctional system focused on rehabilitation, accountability, and public safety.
