Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a South African woman at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, over her alleged involvement in trafficking heroin into Nigeria.
The suspect was apprehended during an intelligence-led anti-narcotics operation at the airport after NDLEA officers reportedly intercepted a consignment of heroin concealed in her luggage. Preliminary investigations indicate that the illicit drug was discovered during routine screening and subsequent searches conducted by anti-drug operatives.
Although the agency has yet to disclose the full identity of the suspect and the exact quantity of heroin recovered, officials said the arrest forms part of ongoing efforts to dismantle international drug trafficking networks using Nigeria as a transit and destination point. The suspect is expected to face further investigation before possible prosecution in accordance with Nigeria’s drug control laws.

The latest interception underscores the NDLEA’s sustained surveillance at the country’s international airports, where the agency has intensified intelligence-driven operations targeting drug couriers and transnational trafficking syndicates. Recent operations have led to several high-profile seizures involving foreign nationals attempting to smuggle narcotics through Nigerian entry points.
The agency has repeatedly warned that it will continue to strengthen collaboration with local and international partners to curb the trafficking of illicit drugs while ensuring that offenders are brought to justice.
