The Lagos State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the death of a 23-year-old student of the Nigerian Law School, identified as Alayande Faith Ajoke, at the institution’s hostel in Victoria Island, Lagos.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, August 7, 2026, with the student reportedly found unresponsive within the hostel premises. Police authorities have confirmed the death and said investigations are underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to reports, the Chief Matron of the Nigerian Law School hostel, Mrs Igbokwe Juliana, reported the incident to the Victoria Island Police Division at about 6:30 a.m. Police personnel subsequently visited the scene as part of their preliminary investigation.
Preliminary accounts indicate that the student may have fallen from the rooftop of the four-storey hostel building. Authorities have, however, not described the circumstances as conclusively established, and the police investigation is expected to determine what happened.
Reports also indicate that a fellow student and a relative had raised concerns after allegedly discovering written notes attributed to the deceased. They reportedly began searching for her before the incident was discovered. The details surrounding the notes remain part of the investigation.
Following the discovery, the deceased’s remains were evacuated to a morgue for preservation, while police detectives documented the scene and commenced further inquiries. A post-mortem examination is expected to form part of efforts to establish the circumstances of the death.
The incident has drawn attention within the Nigerian legal community because it involves a student undergoing professional legal training at the Nigerian Law School. However, there has been no official confirmation establishing any particular reason for the death.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the incident and said the investigation was ongoing. The police have not announced any conclusion regarding the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
The tragedy has also renewed discussion about the pressures that can accompany professional and academic training, although it would be premature to attribute this particular incident to academic, personal or other pressures without evidence from the investigation.
Authorities are expected to continue examining the circumstances surrounding the incident, while the student’s family, colleagues and members of the legal community await further information.
The Nigerian Law School and relevant authorities are expected to provide appropriate support to students and staff affected by the tragedy as the investigation continues. For now, the police inquiry remains the principal avenue for establishing the facts surrounding the death.
