Disaster Strikes Ilorin Mandate Market, 12 Shops Affected in Early-Morning Fire

Posted on September 5, 2026September 5, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on Disaster Strikes Ilorin Mandate Market, 12 Shops Affected in Early-Morning Fire

An early-morning fire has disrupted trading activities at a shopping complex within the Mandate Market area of Ilorin, Kwara State, leaving 12 shops affected.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, September 5, 2026, at a commercial complex situated opposite Alkad Filling Station within the popular market.

According to the Kwara State Fire Service, an emergency call was received concerning the outbreak, prompting firefighters to move to the scene. The first response team arrived at approximately 1:14 a.m. and found the complex, which contains about 40 shops, already engulfed by flames.

The intensity of the blaze raised fears that the fire could spread rapidly to adjoining shops and other properties in the busy commercial area. In response, the state fire service deployed two firefighting appliances to combat the inferno.

The operation was subsequently strengthened by personnel of the Federal Fire Service, who joined the Kwara State team in tackling the blaze. The coordinated intervention helped firefighters bring the situation under control and prevent the flames from reaching other sections of the complex and surrounding properties.

Although 12 shops were affected, the firefighters’ intervention significantly limited the scale of the disaster. No information was immediately provided on casualties in the incident.

The Kwara State Fire Service attributed the extent of the damage principally to the late notification of the outbreak. The agency stressed that delays in reporting fires can allow flames to gain strength before emergency responders arrive.

Preliminary information gathered at the scene suggested that a power surge might have triggered the fire. Some people who were sleeping close to the affected premises reportedly heard a loud combustion sound shortly after electricity was restored. However, the Fire Service cautioned that the precise cause had not been established and remained subject to further investigation.

The Chief Fire Officer of the Kwara State Fire Service, CFS Alabi Muhammed, commended the firefighters for their response, bravery and professionalism during the operation. He also acknowledged the Federal Fire Service for its timely support, saying the collaboration helped prevent the destruction from spreading further.

Alabi urged business owners and members of the public to take electrical safety seriously, particularly by ensuring that electrical installations are undertaken by qualified professionals and that appliances and power sources are properly monitored.

The incident has once again drawn attention to fire risks in densely populated commercial areas, where a small outbreak can quickly threaten several businesses. The Fire Service therefore reiterated the importance of promptly reporting fires, noting that early intervention gives emergency responders a better chance of containing outbreaks before they escalate into major disasters.
