The Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE has officially opened its initial public offering (IPO), giving Nigerians and other investors an opportunity to acquire shares in one of Africa’s most ambitious industrial projects.
The offer, valued at approximately N2.15 trillion, is expected to become one of the largest transactions in the history of Nigeria’s capital market if fully subscribed. The development marks a significant step in the company’s plan to broaden ownership of the refinery and raise funds for future expansion.
Under the offer, the refinery is making available 4.1 billion ordinary shares at N525 per share. The transaction is designed to attract retail investors, allowing individuals to participate in the ownership of the multibillion-dollar facility.
The IPO opened on Monday, September 14, 2026, and is scheduled to close on October 13, 2026. Following the offer, the shares are expected to be listed on the Nigerian Exchange, with trading projected to commence later in November.
The minimum subscription has reportedly been set at 10 shares, requiring an initial investment of N5,250. This structure is intended to make participation more accessible to ordinary Nigerians rather than restricting ownership to large institutional investors.
To widen access, the offer is being supported by digital investment platforms and financial technology companies. PiggyVest, for instance, has partnered with Chapel Hill Denham to make the refinery’s shares available to millions of potential investors through its platform.
The funds raised through the IPO are expected to support the refinery’s ambitious expansion programme. Dangote Industries plans to increase the facility’s refining capacity from approximately 700,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2029, potentially placing it among the largest refining operations in the world.
Located in the Lekki area of Lagos State, the Dangote Refinery was constructed at an estimated cost of about $20 billion. The facility began operations in 2024 and has become a major supplier of refined petroleum products, including petrol, diesel and aviation fuel.
The refinery’s emergence has strengthened Nigeria’s prospects of reducing its dependence on imported petroleum products. Its growing production capacity has also enabled the country to participate more actively in the regional export market for refined fuels.
The public offering comes at a time of heightened international interest in energy security. Disruptions to refining infrastructure and fuel supplies in other parts of the world have increased the strategic importance of large, reliable refining facilities such as Dangote’s.
For Aliko Dangote and his business group, the IPO represents more than a fundraising exercise. It offers an opportunity to bring a wider group of investors into the ownership structure of the refinery while providing capital for expansion. For Nigerians, it creates a potential avenue to participate in the future performance of a major national industrial asset. However, prospective investors should carefully review the official offer documents, understand the risks and seek professional financial advice before subscribing.
