The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast a mixture of sunshine, cloudiness and thunderstorms across different parts of the country, urging residents to take precautions against possible heavy rainfall, strong winds and flash floods.
The weather outlook, covering a three-day period, highlights changing atmospheric conditions across Nigeria’s northern, North-Central and southern regions. The agency’s forecast is intended to help residents, farmers, motorists and other weather-sensitive sectors plan their activities.
According to the forecast, sunny skies and patches of cloud are expected in parts of the northern region, although thunderstorms accompanied by light or moderate rainfall may occur in some locations. The timing and intensity of these conditions are expected to vary from one state to another.
The North-Central region is also expected to experience a combination of sunshine and cloudiness, with prospects of thunderstorms and moderate rainfall in several areas. States within the region, including parts of Kwara, Niger, Kogi, Benue, Nasarawa, Plateau and the Federal Capital Territory, may experience changing weather conditions during the forecast period.
In the southern region, NiMet has predicted cloudy conditions, with possibilities of light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms in several states. Some areas may experience rainfall during the morning, while more widespread thunderstorms could develop later in the afternoon or evening.
The agency’s outlook indicates that residents in coastal areas should remain particularly alert to persistent rainfall. Parts of Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Delta and other southern states may experience wet conditions, increasing the need for proper planning by residents and businesses.
NiMet has also warned that thunderstorms may be accompanied by strong winds. The agency advised residents to secure loose objects around their homes and other structures to reduce the risk of damage during periods of severe weather.
Motorists have been urged to exercise caution, especially when travelling during heavy rainfall. NiMet advised the public to avoid driving through floodwaters, warning that such conditions could endanger lives and damage vehicles. The agency also recommended avoiding travel under intense rainfall where visibility is significantly reduced.
The weather agency further advised residents to disconnect electrical appliances from power sources during thunderstorms. It also warned people to stay away from tall trees, particularly when strong winds accompany rainfall, because falling branches and trees could cause injuries or property damage.
The forecast has implications for farmers, traders, construction workers and other Nigerians whose activities depend heavily on weather conditions. Farmers may need to monitor rainfall patterns when planning fieldwork, while construction operators and outdoor event organisers are encouraged to consider possible disruptions caused by thunderstorms.
NiMet urged members of the public to remain informed by following its regular weather updates and taking appropriate safety measures. The agency also advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports for flight planning, noting the importance of accurate local weather information for safe aviation operations.
**As sunshine alternates with rain across Nigeria, residents are encouraged to remain weather-conscious, plan their movements carefully and respond promptly to official warnings about thunderstorms, strong winds and flooding.**
