Tragedy in Taraba as Mining Pit Collapse Leaves Over 20 Feared Dead in Mayo Kam

Posted on September 18, 2026September 18, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on Tragedy in Taraba as Mining Pit Collapse Leaves Over 20 Feared Dead in Mayo Kam

A mining pit collapse in Mayo Kam community, Bali Local Government Area of Taraba State, has left more than 20 people feared dead or trapped, plunging the rural community into mourning and renewing concerns over the safety of informal mining operations.

The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon while miners were reportedly working inside the pit. Local accounts said the sudden collapse buried several people underground, with residents immediately raising the alarm over the scale of the disaster.

A resident of Mayo Kam, Kenneth Ayila, confirmed the incident and said more than 20 people were feared dead. However, the precise number of casualties had not been independently verified as of the latest reports, making the final death toll uncertain.

The tragedy has reportedly affected the Mayo Kam community particularly heavily. Community leader Mallam Usman Bello said most of those believed to have been caught in the collapse were indigenes of the community, while only a small number of miners typically came from neighbouring communities to work at the site.

Bello described the incident as a devastating blow to the community, saying residents were in shock following the collapse. Reports indicate that women and children were among those feared killed or trapped, although authorities had yet to establish the complete identity and number of victims.

The Taraba State Police Command has meanwhile urged caution over casualty figures pending official confirmation. Police spokesperson Victor Msherizah said the command had not received a formal report from its area command in Bali at the time of his response to inquiries.

Another report from Vanguard said rescue teams had recovered five bodies from the collapsed pit while search operations continued for others who might still be trapped beneath the debris. The report also noted that the full number of casualties remained unknown.

The disaster has consequently brought renewed attention to the risks associated with artisanal and allegedly illegal mining in Taraba State. Poorly supervised mining sites can expose workers to unstable excavations and other hazards, particularly where adequate engineering assessments and safety measures are absent.

The incident has also revived questions about enforcement of existing restrictions on illegal mining activities in the state. Reports have noted that concerns over unauthorised mining have persisted, raising questions about how effectively regulations are being implemented and how miners operating outside formal structures can be brought under safer conditions.

As search and recovery efforts continue, the immediate priority remains determining the actual number of people affected and recovering anyone who may still be trapped. The Mayo Kam tragedy has left families and the wider community waiting for definitive information while authorities are expected to establish the circumstances that led to the collapse.

For Mayo Kam residents, the incident represents a profound community tragedy, while for policymakers and mining authorities, it underscores the continuing safety challenges surrounding informal mining. A full assessment of the site, confirmation of the casualty figures and investigation into the circumstances of the collapse will be necessary to establish what happened and inform measures aimed at preventing a recurrence.
