Fresh details have emerged regarding the detention of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, following an update from his media adviser, Muyiwa Adekeye. The former governor, who recently honoured an invitation by anti-corruption authorities in Abuja, remains in custody as legal proceedings surrounding his case gather momentum.
El-Rufai reportedly presented himself to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on February 16, 2026, in connection with allegations linked to his tenure as governor of Kaduna State between 2015 and 2023. After undergoing questioning, he was initially granted administrative bail. However, shortly after his release from the EFCC’s custody, he was taken in by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for further investigation.
According to Adekeye, El-Rufai’s legal team promptly filed a bail application with the ICPC, but as of February 23, there had been no official response from the commission. The aide also indicated that the former governor’s lawyers had not been presented with a formal remand order authorising his continued detention, raising concerns about compliance with constitutional provisions regarding the length of time a suspect may be held without charge.
The situation has triggered parallel legal actions. El-Rufai is expected to be arraigned on February 25 on charges reportedly filed by the Department of State Services (DSS). At the same time, his legal team has approached the Federal Capital Territory High Court, seeking enforcement of his fundamental rights and requesting that he be admitted to bail pending the determination of the case.
As part of the ongoing investigation, operatives of the ICPC conducted a search of El-Rufai’s residence located on Aso Drive in Abuja. His lawyer has described the search as unlawful and a violation of his client’s constitutional rights, a claim that adds another layer of legal contention to the unfolding matter.
While the specific details of the allegations against the former governor have not yet been fully disclosed by the investigating agencies, the development has drawn public attention given El-Rufai’s high political profile and previous roles in national affairs. Observers note that the coming days, particularly the scheduled court appearances, will be critical in determining the direction of the case and the legal standing of the former governor.
The unfolding events underscore the broader dynamics of anti-corruption enforcement and due process within Nigeria’s legal framework, as the authorities and the defence prepare to test their positions before the courts.
