The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may soon commence a nationwide strike following months of warnings, ASUU President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke has declared.
In an interview, the ASUU President confirmed that the union had deliberately delayed the proposed strike to give the Federal Government a chance to address the union’s concerns.
According to Osodeke, the purpose of the delay was to allow the government sufficient time to act on the issues raised by ASUU. However, despite months of waiting, the government has not made any tangible progress in resolving these concerns.
“We are still on the same old narrative,” Osodeke stated. “As a union, it is time for us to take action on our proposed strike, and that will be early January if the government refuses to do the needful by then.”
He explained that ASUU members have grown increasingly frustrated, but the leadership has been pleading for more time for the government to act. At the union’s last general meeting in November, the leadership convinced members to allow the government the months of November and December to resolve the issues, hoping there would be progress. Unfortunately, the situation remains unchanged.
“As of now, we are going to reconvene our meeting in early January and take a decisive direction immediately if nothing is done by then,” he added.
