The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has ordered intensified efforts to rescue worshippers abducted during a recent attack on communities in the Dekara District of Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
Disu gave the directive on Saturday, August 29, 2026, during a working visit to Niger State aimed at assessing the security situation and reviewing ongoing operations to locate and safely recover the victims.
The IGP visited the Niger State Government House, where he was received by Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba, who represented Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, alongside the Commissioner for Homeland Security, Barrister Maurice Bello Magaji.
During the meeting, Disu conveyed the condolences of the Nigeria Police Force to the state government, residents of the affected communities and families of those caught up in the attack. He stressed that rescuing the abducted persons and apprehending those responsible remain key priorities of the security operation.
The police chief commended the Niger State Commissioner of Police, CP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, for the command’s response to the incident and for providing timely updates on developments. He also acknowledged the state government’s continued logistical and welfare support for police personnel.
According to the IGP, the support provided by the state government, including operational vehicles, repairs of Armoured Personnel Carriers and welfare assistance, has contributed to strengthening the capacity of security personnel operating in the state.
While addressing officers and men of the Niger State Police Command, Disu directed them to maintain intelligence-driven and professionally coordinated operations, with particular attention to the protection of victims and residents of communities affected by the violence.
He also pledged continued assistance from Force Headquarters in areas including logistics, mobility, intelligence gathering, training and overall operational capacity to enable the command to respond more effectively to security threats.
Disu further called for stronger cooperation among security agencies and deeper engagement with local communities. He emphasised that traditional rulers, religious leaders, community representatives and other stakeholders have important roles to play in generating actionable intelligence and facilitating early intervention.
The IGP also held a meeting with the Emir of Minna, Alhaji Dr. Umar Farouk Bahago, CON, during the visit. The engagement was aimed at strengthening cooperation with traditional institutions and discussing ways of improving community intelligence and supporting efforts to restore peace across Niger State.
Deputy Governor Garba, in his response, commended the IGP for personally visiting the state and reviewing the security situation. He reaffirmed the Niger State Government’s commitment to supporting the police and other security agencies in protecting residents, restoring stability and securing the release of the abducted victims.
The Nigeria Police Force subsequently reassured residents that efforts to locate and rescue the abducted persons would continue, while security personnel would pursue those responsible for the attack with a view to bringing them to justice.
