Arsenal continued their impressive opening to the 2026/27 Premier League campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park on Monday night. The result gave Mikel Arteta's side another valuable three points away from home.
The encounter was the Gunners' second league fixture of the new season, following their commanding 3-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City in their opening match. Arsenal therefore maintained their winning start without conceding a goal.
The first half at Villa Park was closely contested, with neither side able to break the deadlock. Arsenal gradually began to take greater control of the contest, but Aston Villa's defensive organisation ensured the visitors were unable to find an opening before the interval.
Arsenal eventually found the breakthrough in the 59th minute, with Bukayo Saka finishing from close range to put the visitors ahead. The goal came after a move involving Gabriel, Eberechi Eze and Riccardo Calafiori, whose low delivery across the face of goal allowed Saka to finish.
The goal changed the complexion of the game as Villa were forced to chase an equaliser while Arsenal looked increasingly comfortable protecting their advantage. Saka's strike ultimately proved to be the difference between the two sides.
There was also a major VAR moment shortly before Arsenal's goal when the visitors initially appeared to have won a penalty. After a review, however, the officials determined that the foul on Saka had occurred just outside the penalty area, resulting in a free-kick instead.
Aston Villa pushed forward in the closing stages in search of a leveller, but Arsenal's defence held firm. The hosts were unable to seriously test Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, with Villa finishing the match without a shot on target.
For Villa manager Unai Emery, the defeat adds to a difficult beginning to the new campaign. His side had already suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Brighton in their opening league fixture, leaving them still searching for their first Premier League points.
For Arsenal, however, the victory represents another important statement of intent from the defending champions. Arteta's men have now opened their title defence with two wins from two matches and two clean sheets, giving them an early platform in the title race.
The Gunners will now turn their attention to their next league assignment, while Villa face the challenge of rebuilding confidence after consecutive defeats. Arsenal's ability to grind out an away victory in a demanding fixture could prove particularly valuable as the season develops.
