A dismissed Catholic nun, Rev. Sr. Anastasia Kinse, has alleged that she possesses concrete evidence of sexual harassment by a priest within the Catholic Church but has chosen not to make it public.
Speaking during an interview on Prime Time, a programme on Arise Television, Rev. Sr. Kinse claimed her dismissal from Veritas University, Abuja, was a direct result of her attempts to expose what she described as “sexual misconduct” among some members of the clergy under the Auchi Catholic Diocese in Edo State.
According to her, “It’s not that I don’t have the evidence of being sexually harassed by a priest. I do, but I cannot put them out there.” She further alleged that she possesses video and audio recordings implicating a head of department at Veritas University in acts of harassment.
Rev. Sr. Kinse, who joined the Congregation of Mother of Perpetual Help of the Archangels Sisters in 2015, said she endured several challenges within the church system and often confided in her Superior-General and Bishop about her experiences.
She narrated how a priest she worked closely with constantly shouted at her whenever she approached him in the office. On another occasion, she reported that a priest living in the same compound allegedly tried to touch her inappropriately. “I didn’t know if that was a norm, so I told my superior, but she advised me to ignore him,” she recounted.
Rev. Sr. Kinse also revealed that in 2016, a priest invited her to accompany him to his parish for a week, an invitation she found inappropriate. She claimed another priest once wrapped his belt around her waist, saying he wanted to check her clothing size, which she described as a deeply traumatic experience.
“That incident broke me,” she said. “It gave me a lot of trauma, and they later described it as madness.”
The former nun maintained that her dismissal and the subsequent labeling of her behavior as instability were attempts to silence her for speaking out against sexual misconduct and abuse of power within the Church.
