Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina has reportedly fled the country following escalating protests and growing calls for his resignation.
According to reports, the embattled president was scheduled to deliver a national address at 17:30 GMT on Monday, but the event was abruptly postponed. Sources within the presidency cited threats by soldiers to seize control of the state television station as the reason for the delay.
This marks the second time Rajoelina has postponed a public address in recent days, deepening uncertainty about his whereabouts and the stability of his government.
The president has not been seen in public since last Wednesday, further fueling speculation about a possible political breakdown.
Opposition leader Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko, who also serves in Madagascar’s parliament, told Reuters that Rajoelina departed the country on Sunday after several units of the military defected to join anti-government protesters.
