Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has urged the Nigerian Senate to open a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the controversial death of 13-year-old Ochanya Ogbanje, a case that continues to generate nationwide concern over sexual violence against minors. The Kogi Central senator made the appeal during Wednesday’s plenary, stressing that justice must finally prevail seven years after the incident.
Akpoti-Uduaghan presented the petition on behalf of Inibehe Effiong Chambers, a legal firm representing the interests of the late teenager. According to her, the petition seeks renewed legislative attention to a case many Nigerians believe has suffered prolonged delays, technical bottlenecks, and alleged interference.
The lawmaker accused some unnamed individuals of allegedly working behind the scenes to shield key suspects from arrest and prosecution. She warned that any attempt to obstruct justice in a case involving the abuse and death of a child should be treated as a national concern requiring urgent Senate scrutiny.
Ochanya Ogbanje, a student of the Federal Government Girls College, Gboko in Benue State, died in 2018 after suffering severe complications reportedly linked to prolonged sexual assault. Her death triggered national outrage, sparking rallies, social media campaigns, and calls for stronger laws against child sexual abuse.

At the heart of the case are allegations against Victor and Andrew Ogbuja, who were accused of repeatedly abusing the minor during her stay with their family. Rights activists have continued to pressure the authorities to ensure a thorough and transparent prosecution, insisting that justice for Ochanya would set a precedent for protecting vulnerable children across the country.
While reading the petition on the Senate floor, Akpoti-Uduaghan emphasized that the Nigerian justice system must not be perceived as one that allows offenders to walk free simply because they have influence or connections.
