UK to Roll Out Digital eVisas for Nigerian Study and Work Visa Applicants from July 15

Posted on July 9, 2025July 9, 2025 By Rextun boss No Comments on UK to Roll Out Digital eVisas for Nigerian Study and Work Visa Applicants from July 15

In a significant development aimed at modernising its immigration system, the United Kingdom has announced that, effective from 15 July 2025, Nigerian nationals applying for study and work visas will begin receiving digital eVisas in place of the traditional visa stickers that are typically placed in passports. This update was confirmed by the UK Home Office through the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) service, and was further communicated by the British High Commission in Abuja.

The introduction of eVisas is a key milestone in the UK’s plan to establish a fully digital border and immigration system. Under the new process, eligible Nigerian applicants who apply on or after 15 July for study or work visa routes will receive their visa electronically through a UKVI online account. These eVisas will serve as secure digital records of immigration status and will replace the physical vignette stickers formerly issued and placed in passports.

To obtain the eVisa, applicants must still complete biometric enrolment at an approved visa application centre. Once the application is approved, the applicant will receive an email notification instructing them to log into their UKVI account to access their eVisa. Thereafter, their immigration status can be verified online by airlines, border officers, employers, and landlords using the UKVI’s secure “View and Prove” platform.

This change is expected to significantly reduce processing time, prevent fraud, and increase convenience for applicants. According to the UK government, the digital system enhances national security by enabling real-time verification and eliminating the risk of forged or tampered visa stickers. Moreover, it offers applicants the ease of carrying their immigration status digitally without the need to surrender their passports for physical endorsement.

However, the transition to eVisas applies only to new applications made on or after 15 July 2025. Those who submitted their applications before that date, or those applying under other visa categories such as visitor or family visas, will continue to receive the conventional visa vignette in their passports. Additionally, dependent family members of primary applicants may still be issued physical visas in the interim, depending on their circumstances.

The British High Commission has advised Nigerian applicants to ensure they create and maintain their UKVI accounts accurately, and to familiarise themselves with how to access and use their eVisas for travel and verification purposes. Officials stressed that this change is not only a step forward for applicants but also part of a global shift toward digital documentation and border efficiency.

As the July 15 implementation date approaches, intending students and professionals seeking to study or work in the UK are encouraged to review the updated procedures and ensure compliance with the new requirements. The move reflects the UK government’s continued efforts to streamline immigration processes and adapt to the demands of a more digitally driven global travel environment.
