The Edo State Special Security Squad has arrested 12 suspected cultists and sealed two apartments allegedly being used for cult initiation activities following the killing of a student near the gate of the University of Benin in Benin City.
The security operation, carried out under the code name “Operation Flush Out Cultists and Kidnappers,” followed the fatal attack on a young man around the university environment on Sunday, May 10, 2026. Security operatives stormed several identified hotspots across Benin City, including Ekosodin, Isihor, Old Road off S&T Barracks, Airport Road, 19th Street in Ugbowo, Ogba-Evbuodia and Evbuomore Quarters.
According to the spokesperson of the squad, Noah Idemudia, the raids were led by the Chief Security Officer and Principal Security Officer to Monday Okpebholo. He disclosed that the 12 suspects were apprehended during coordinated operations targeting cult-related activities in the state capital. Idemudia, however, clarified that the suspects had not yet been directly linked to the killing near the UNIBEN gate but were allegedly identified as members of different cult groups after security operatives reportedly discovered cult insignia and other incriminating materials in their possession.
The squad also sealed two apartments allegedly used as initiation centres. One of the properties, located in Ogba-Evbuodia, was reportedly being used for cult initiation ceremonies, while another apartment in Evbuomore Quarters allegedly contained shrines and fetish items suspected to be connected to initiation rituals. Authorities said the owners of the affected properties had been invited for questioning as investigations continue.
Speaking further, Idemudia accused some community Okaigheles of allegedly harbouring criminals and aiding violent activities in parts of Edo State. He claimed intelligence reports indicated that illegal weapons used in attacks were often traced to certain communities. He warned community leaders to ensure peace within their domains and cautioned against possession of unlicensed firearms.
The arrested suspects have reportedly been transferred to the Anti-Cultism Unit of the Nigeria Police Force in Edo State for profiling and further investigation. Security authorities also warned against any planned cult anniversary celebrations, stressing that law enforcement agencies had already been placed on high alert to prevent unlawful gatherings and violent clashes in the state.
