Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, national leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and a former governor of Kano State, has made a dramatic political U-turn by endorsing Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf amid the ongoing defection of NNPP members to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The endorsement marks a sharp reversal of Kwankwaso’s earlier hardline stance against any form of defection from the party he founded.
The shift became public after a video message attributed to Kwankwaso circulated widely, in which he acknowledged the constitutional right of Governor Yusuf and other NNPP members to choose their political future. His remarks effectively signaled acceptance of the governor’s planned move to the APC, despite weeks of tension and public disagreement between both men.
Only recently, Kwankwaso had openly criticized the rumoured defection, describing it as a betrayal of the NNPP’s mandate and the Kwankwasiyya political movement. His new position therefore represents a significant softening, surprising supporters and political observers who had expected a prolonged confrontation.
Governor Abba Yusuf was elected in 2023 on the NNPP platform, riding on the influence of Kwankwaso’s political structure in Kano. However, cracks soon emerged in their relationship, culminating in deep internal party divisions and speculations that Yusuf was seeking a more secure political base ahead of future electoral contests.
The defection rumours heightened political tension in Kano State, prompting increased security around the Government House and intense debates within the state legislature. Several lawmakers publicly defended Yusuf’s decision, arguing that remaining in the NNPP could isolate the state government at the federal level.
Kwankwaso’s endorsement is widely interpreted as an attempt to de-escalate the crisis and prevent further fragmentation of his political base. Analysts believe the former governor may be prioritizing political stability in Kano over strict party loyalty, especially as defections continue to thin NNPP’s ranks.
Within the APC, the expected influx of Governor Yusuf and his allies is seen as a major boost to the party’s strength in Kano, a state long regarded as politically strategic. Party insiders say preparations are ongoing for a formal defection ceremony, though no official date has been confirmed.
The development also underscores a broader trend of political realignment across Nigeria, as politicians reposition themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections. Party loyalty has increasingly taken a back seat to strategic calculations about power, influence, and electoral survival.
For the NNPP, Kwankwaso’s volte-face raises questions about the party’s future relevance beyond Kano State. Once projected as a rising third force in national politics, the party now faces the challenge of retaining cohesion amid high-profile exits.
As events continue to unfold, attention remains fixed on how this endorsement will reshape Kano’s political landscape and whether Kwankwaso’s influence can endure beyond party lines in an era of fluid political alliances.
