MultiChoice, the parent company of DStv and GOtv, has announced new customer-friendly measures aimed at easing the cost of pay-TV subscriptions across its major African markets. The latest updates include the introduction of a shared payment feature and a significant reduction in decoder prices.
The newly launched shared payment option allows a primary DStv account holder to split their monthly subscription cost with another person. The feature is available through the MyDStv mobile application and is designed to give customers more flexibility in managing subscription payments.
Under the arrangement, the main account holder can generate a payment request and send it to a friend or family member. The invited contributor can then pay part of the subscription directly, with the total amount credited to the primary account once payments are completed.
MultiChoice said the initiative reflects the realities of shared households and rising living costs, particularly in urban centres where subscription expenses are often split among family members or roommates. The company noted that the feature does not change account ownership, as control remains with the primary subscriber.
In addition to the shared payment feature, MultiChoice has reduced the retail prices of its decoders across several markets, including South Africa and Nigeria. The price cuts are aimed at lowering the entry barrier for new customers and encouraging inactive subscribers to return to the platform.
In South Africa, the HD Single View decoder now sells at a significantly reduced price, while premium models such as the Explora 3B and Explora Ultra have also seen notable price drops. Some discounts are available through accredited retailers, service centres, and online platforms for a limited promotional period.
Nigerian customers have also benefited from decoder price reductions under recent MultiChoice campaigns. The lower prices apply to selected DStv and GOtv decoder models, making access to satellite television more affordable for households affected by economic pressures.
Beyond hardware and payment flexibility, MultiChoice has continued to enhance value on its lower-tier packages. Several channels have been added permanently to entry-level bouquets, expanding entertainment options without additional subscription costs.
Industry analysts say the latest changes reflect MultiChoice’s broader strategy to retain customers amid growing competition from streaming services and changing viewing habits. Flexible payments and lower upfront costs are increasingly seen as critical to sustaining subscriber growth.
MultiChoice maintains that the new features are part of its long-term commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction. The company said it will continue to explore ways to make its services more accessible while delivering quality local and international content to viewers across Africa.
