Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, held a private meeting in Kano State on Thursday, a development that has generated renewed political interest ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The meeting took place during Obasanjo’s visit to Kano and was confirmed in a statement released on Friday by Kwankwaso’s media aide, Saifullahi Hassan. According to the statement, the former Kano State governor paid a courtesy visit to Obasanjo at his temporary residence in the state.
Kwankwaso was accompanied by Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, a former Deputy Governor of Kano State and the NDC’s governorship candidate for the 2027 election in the state.
Although both leaders reportedly held what was described as a cordial and constructive discussion, neither Kwankwaso’s camp nor Obasanjo’s associates disclosed the issues discussed during the closed-door meeting.
Photographs released after the visit showed the two politicians exchanging greetings in a relaxed atmosphere, but no official communiqué was issued at the end of the engagement.
The meeting has nevertheless sparked speculation among political observers, given the growing realignments and consultations ahead of the 2027 elections. However, there is no official indication that the discussions were linked to any political alliance or electoral arrangement.
Obasanjo, who has remained an influential voice in Nigeria’s political landscape since leaving office in 2007, has continued to receive leading political figures across party lines. Kwankwaso, meanwhile, remains one of the prominent figures in Nigeria’s opposition politics and currently serves as the vice-presidential candidate of the NDC.
As of the time of filing this report, neither camp had provided further details on the outcome of the meeting.
