Traditional rulers in Ife-North Local Government Area of Osun State, under the banner of Origbo Meje Obas, have issued a 21-day ultimatum to the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, demanding evidence to support his recent claim that the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, is plotting to assassinate him.
The controversy began after a viral video surfaced on social media in which the Oluwo alleged that the Ooni, in collaboration with his former wife, Queen Chanel, was conspiring to eliminate him.
He further declared that the rift between them would never be resolved.
Reacting to the allegation, the Origbo Meje monarchs condemned the Oluwo’s remarks, describing them as reckless, unbecoming of a traditional ruler, and a direct affront to the revered throne of Oduduwa.
Speaking on behalf of the group at his palace in Edunabon, the Salu of Edunabon, Oba Adesoji Kehinde, accused the Oluwo of persistent misconduct, disrespect, and attempts to ridicule the traditional institution in Yorubaland.
“There is no disputing the supremacy of the Ooni of Ife’s throne as the head of all Obas in Yorubaland. Archival records clearly show Oluwo’s repeated public attacks on the Ooni,” Oba Kehinde stated.
He also criticised the Oluwo for allegedly changing his titles frequently from “Emir of Iwo” to “Alaafin of Iwo” as a way to attract media attention, adding that such behaviour diminishes the respect accorded to Yoruba monarchs.
The traditional rulers warned that if the Oluwo fails to provide credible evidence within the 21-day period, they would have no choice but to pursue legal action to defend the integrity of the Yoruba traditional institution.
