Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerian Senate has suspended its ongoing legislative recess and directed all senators to reconvene for an emergency plenary session as concerns mount over the worsening security situation across the country.
According to an official notice issued by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, lawmakers have been summoned to an emergency sitting scheduled for Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja. The directive was issued on the instruction of Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
The notice explained that the emergency session became necessary due to matters of urgent national importance requiring immediate legislative intervention, with national security issues topping the agenda. Senators are expected to deliberate on the escalating incidents of terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other security challenges affecting several parts of the country.
The decision represents a significant departure from the National Assembly’s earlier legislative timetable. Both chambers had recently adjourned plenary to observe the Democracy Day holiday and allow members to engage with their constituents, with a formal resumption initially scheduled for July 7. The emergency recall, however, underscores the gravity of the security concerns confronting the nation.
The development comes amid growing public pressure on government institutions to intensify efforts aimed at restoring security and protecting lives and property. Recent attacks by armed groups, continued incidents of kidnapping, and concerns over the safety of farming communities have heightened calls for decisive action from both the executive and legislative arms of government.
Political observers believe the emergency sitting could provide lawmakers with an opportunity to review existing security policies, consider fresh legislative measures, and engage relevant stakeholders on strategies for strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture. Discussions are also expected to touch on broader national concerns linked to economic stability and public safety.
The Senate leadership has urged all members to make the necessary arrangements to attend the special session, emphasizing the importance of a united legislative response to the challenges facing the country. As Nigerians await the outcome of the emergency plenary, attention will be focused on the resolutions and recommendations that emerge from the deliberations and their potential impact on the nation’s security landscape.
