Former Governor of Sokoto State and ex-Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has formally resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing persistent internal crises and leadership disagreements within the party.
Tambuwal announced his decision in a statement on Thursday, revealing that he had already communicated his resignation in writing to his ward chairman.
The former governor, who played a prominent role within the PDP for many years, described the party as an important part of his political journey, expressing gratitude for the opportunities it provided him to serve Nigeria.
According to him, the PDP platform enabled him to serve the country in key leadership positions, including his tenure as Speaker of the House of Representatives and later as Governor of Sokoto State during his second term in office.
However, Tambuwal said the party’s internal challenges have worsened in recent times, making it increasingly difficult for him to remain within its fold.
He noted that persistent internal disputes, leadership disagreements, and widening divisions within the PDP have eroded the unity and direction that once defined the party.
“These developments have unfortunately weakened the unity and direction that once defined the party and have necessitated this decision,” Tambuwal said.
Following his resignation, the former governor announced that he has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) alongside his political associates and supporters.
Tambuwal explained that his move to the ADC was guided by his conviction that Nigeria requires a stronger political platform built on integrity, accountability, inclusiveness, and a clear commitment to national development.
He reaffirmed his dedication to public service, stressing that his political decisions remain anchored on the ideals of democracy, justice, and national unity.
The development adds another high-profile figure to the ADC and could reshape political alignments as Nigeria’s political actors continue to reposition ahead of future electoral contests.
