A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers State has reportedly aligned with the political coalition associated with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development represents a significant shift in the state’s political landscape, particularly as the coalition continues to attract politicians from different political platforms.
The move comes against the backdrop of recent political realignments in Rivers State. Governor Siminalayi Fubara on July 22 publicly declared his support for the Wike-led Rainbow Coalition and endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term, while also backing Kingsley Chinda as the coalition’s preferred governorship candidate.
Wike has repeatedly described the Rainbow Coalition as a broad political alliance bringing together actors from different parties. In May, he said the coalition would assess its areas of electoral strength and coordinate its strategy accordingly ahead of the 2027 polls.
The latest development is particularly notable because the Rivers State ADC had previously dismissed the influence of the Rainbow Coalition and maintained that it would concentrate on building its grassroots structure and presenting its own candidates for the 2027 elections.
The reported alignment therefore signals a possible change in political calculations within the Rivers ADC ahead of the elections. However, the development should be understood as a factional political realignment unless and until the national leadership of the ADC formally confirms any broader organisational decision.
The emerging coalition politics in Rivers State is expected to remain a major factor in the contest for elective positions in 2027, with rival political formations continuing to mobilise support and negotiate alliances ahead of the polls.
