Tinubu Signs Bill Upgrading Kaduna Polytechnic to Federal University of Technology

Posted on October 16, 2026October 16, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on Tinubu Signs Bill Upgrading Kaduna Polytechnic to Federal University of Technology

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assented to the bill upgrading the Federal Polytechnic, Kaduna, to the Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, Kaduna, in a major development for technical and vocational education in Nigeria.

The development was disclosed on Friday, October 16, 2026, with expectations that the institution’s new status will strengthen technology-driven education, research and practical skills development.

Hon. Daniel Amos, who represents Jema’a/Sanga Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives and chairs the House Committee on House Services, disclosed the development while commending the leadership behind the legislation.

Amos praised the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, who sponsored the bill and pursued its passage through the National Assembly. He described the legislation as an important step towards advancing education and national development.

According to Amos, the initiative reflects a commitment to repositioning technical and vocational education as a vital component of Nigeria’s development strategy. He noted that the new university would create opportunities for specialised training and help develop the skilled workforce needed to support economic growth.

The legislation repeals the law establishing the Federal Polytechnic, Kaduna, and provides for its conversion into the Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, Kaduna. The change gives the institution a new statutory identity and a university-focused mandate centred on technology and vocational studies.

With the transition, the institution is expected to broaden its degree offerings, deepen research activities and improve practical training. These areas are increasingly important in preparing graduates for a labour market shaped by technological change, industrial innovation and demand for specialised skills.

Amos also expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for assenting to the Kaduna legislation alongside a separate bill establishing the Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, Yaba, Lagos. Both bills were sponsored by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, according to reports on the development.

The lawmaker described the President’s assent as consistent with the administration’s stated commitment to education reform and human capital development under its Renewed Hope Agenda. He also congratulated the people of Kaduna State, as well as the institution’s management, staff and students, on the development.

Beyond the change in status, the new university is expected to strengthen opportunities for research, innovation and industry-oriented education in Kaduna State and neighbouring communities. Its impact, however, will depend on effective implementation, adequate funding, qualified personnel, modern facilities and academic programmes that respond to employers’ needs and the wider economy.

Amos expressed optimism that the House of Representatives would continue to support the institution’s smooth take-off. The conversion marks a significant institutional development, but its lasting value will ultimately be measured by the quality of education delivered, the skills students acquire and the contribution graduates make to Nigeria’s technological and industrial advancement.
