Two African nations have now bowed out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after South Africa joined Tunisia on the list of eliminated teams following a dramatic Round of 32 defeat to co-hosts Canada.
South Africa’s campaign came to an agonising end on Sunday after conceding a stoppage-time goal in a 1-0 loss to Canada at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. Midfielder Stephen Eustáquio scored the decisive goal in the 91st minute, sending the co-hosts into the Round of 16 for the first time in their history.
The result made South Africa the second African country to exit the tournament. Tunisia had earlier been eliminated during the group stage after failing to secure qualification for the knockout rounds.
Despite the two exits, Africa has enjoyed one of its strongest World Cup campaigns under the expanded 48-team format. Several African representatives progressed beyond the group stage, including Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, Ivory Coast, DR Congo, Algeria, Cape Verde and Ghana, with knockout fixtures continuing this week.
For South Africa, the defeat was particularly painful after a disciplined defensive display had kept Canada at bay for 90 minutes. However, a late defensive lapse allowed Eustáquio to fire home the winner and end Bafana Bafana’s memorable tournament run.
Canada’s victory marked a historic milestone for the tournament co-hosts, who advanced to the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup for the first time, while South Africa departed with credit for a resilient campaign that rekindled optimism about the nation’s football future.
